TRUST COMPLETES ITS FIFTH TRINITY ALPS
WILDERNESS PURCHASE
The threat of logging
deep within northern California’s rugged Trinity Alps
Wilderness has been averted by The Wilderness
Land Trust’s purchase of a 160-acre
parcel along the Granite Creek Trail.
Commercial logging of the isolated parcel,
which has never been cut, could have
impacted thousands of acres of surrounding
wilderness. The Trust will donate the
parcel to the Forest Service to be protected
forever as wilderness – undisturbed
by mankind.
The Trinity Alps Wilderness is one
of California’s finest natural
treasures. At higher elevations the
granite peaks, permanent snowfields,
meadows, and alpine lakes remind hikers
of the High Sierra. The rich virgin
forests found at lower elevations support
19 different species of conifers.
The Trust has been working in the Trinity
Alps for years with impressive results.
A dozen years ago, the 525,627-acre
wilderness area included 4,110 acres
of privately-owned land. With this latest
acquisition the Trust has now purchased
1,760 acres in five separate transactions,
reducing private land inside the wilderness
area to 2,350 acres.
