Ways to Give

We welcome the support of anyone who views our work as a means to fulfilling their hopes and aspirations for protecting our wild places.

-Brad Borst, President

The Wilderness Land Trust works every day to protect our National Wilderness Preservation System.  We are small and focused, and we work tirelessly to put every donated dollar to work when private property within designated or proposed wilderness goes up for sale.  It’s our mission to acquire these threatening “holes” within the fabric of our wilderness before they are sold to yet another private landowner who will spend another generation developing private dreams.

The Wilderness Land Trust exists to protect and pass on to future generations a collection of irreplaceable spaces and a passion for wilderness.

How can you make wilderness a part of your legacy?

Supporters of the Trust play a critical role in keeping America’s wilderness wild.  If you enjoy hiking, hunting, camping or exploring in designated wilderness areas, or simply want to know that the wild places you cherish will be there for future generations, we ask for your generous support today.  Here’s how:

Make a contribution, renew your support or give a little extra on behalf of someone you know.  It’s simple, safe, secure and only takes a few, short steps: click here

Send a Contribution by Mail

The Trust is deeply grateful for any size contribution in support of our work.  Those who give $1,000 or more a year are recognized as a “Sentinel” donor, a nod to similarly named majestic mountain peaks residing in 11 western states that appear to protect the surrounding landscape. Donor-Advised Funds

Donor-Advised Funds allow donors to make a charitable contribution, receive an immediate tax deduction and then recommend grants from the fund over time. Clients of BNY Mellon, Fidelity Charitable and Schwab Charitable can make a designation here. To learn more call Brad Borst, President, at 206-397-5240, or inquire by email.

Gift of Stock

Since the height of the 2007 recession, stocks have almost doubled in value.  If you’re fortunate enough to own stock that has increased in value since you purchased it, selling appreciated stock can be a very cost-effective way to support the work of the Trust. The easiest way to make a gift of stock is to transfer the shares electronically. Tell your broker or financial advisor you would like to make a gift of stock and give them the following information. To learn more call Brad Borst, President, at 206-397-5240, or inquire by email.

Gift of Real Estate

Donating appreciated real estate to WLT, a 501c3 nonprofit organization, yields benefits to the organization and may provide substantial benefits to the donor.

  • Donate real property that is within or adjacent to designated wilderness, whereby the transfer of property directly meets our mission.
  • Donate other real property that The Trust can liquidate to support the organization.

The basic benefits of donating real estate:

  • You receive an income tax deduction equal to the appraised fair market value of the property, with no capital gains tax due on the transfer to us.
  • You remove a large taxable asset from your estate.

For all gifts of real estate worth more than $5,000, fair market value will be determined by an independent appraisal that you obtain. The IRS requires the appraisal to be reviewed, approved and the IRS donation form 8282 to be signed by the Trust, as well as by the appraiser.

We can work with you and your financial advisors to determine if a donation of real estate makes sense for you. To learn more call Aimee Rutledge at, 415-606-5895, or inquire by email.

Include the Trust in your Estate Plans

You can help us fulfill the legacy of wilderness simply through the creation of a bequest in your will or by designating the Trust as a beneficiary of your retirement fund.  Speak with a knowledgeable, reputable financial advisor today to help you get started, or call Brad Borst at 206-397-5240 or inquire by email.

Gift or Loan Funds for a Specific Project

With active projects in nearly every western state, you’ll likely find a project near or within a wild place you and your family love.  Help us protect your favorite place with a gift to specifically help on a project, or a no-interest loan to fund the acquisition of a property.  Upon completion of the project, forgiving a portion or the entirety of your loan is a wonderful way to support the Trust, or simply ask that we reinvest your dollars in the next project.

Workplace Matching Gifts

Your generosity may be matched by a workplace giving program. Did you know that a significant portion of these funds go unused every year? Please let us know if you need additional information to set up a matching gift through your employer.

Corporate Gifts

Your business can join us in keeping the promise of wilderness by becoming a corporate sponsor. Contact us to learn more about how to give.

The Wilderness Land Trust is a 501(c)3 nonprofit. Contributions are 100% tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.
